“Fourteen. Fourteen ways of hearing an absent melody.”
—ERIK LARSEN
Set design for Enigma Variations by Éric Emmanuel Schmitt.
A remote island study envisioned as a landscape of objects that hover somewhere between vitality and decay, presence and absence.
On the one hand, a teeming mass of things that have lost their identity: a baroque accumulation of weathered remnants and traces. On the other, a series of objects whose identity is animated when they are engaged with or aggregate.
Things which—on stage, as in life—are not just background, but active (if enigmatic) participants in the creation of meaning and memory.
